Arc diagram

This is a linear chart that shows connections between items (nodes) using curved lines. Essentially, it's a two-dimensional network diagram. The arcs can vary in size and weight to indicate the strength or importance of the relationships.

Tips for use and when NOT to use

Too many connections become hard to interpret, so aim for no more than 20 nodes. You can use colour or thickness to emphasise important connections. Label nodes and connections clearly, and consider using a legend to explain any visual encoding. Combine with a timeline to show how events or relationships evolve over time.

Use case / Examples

1. To show connections between stakeholders in a complex energy transition project.
2. To visualise connections between different themes or topics mentioned in executive interviews about digital transformation challenges.
