Column-line chart

Alternative name:

Combo chart; dual-axis chart

The column-line chart combines a line graph with a column chart. The columns represent one variable, and the line overlays another variable. It can also be used to show two variables over time.

Tips for use and when NOT to use

Clearly distinguish between line and column data using different colours or styles. For clarity, limit the number of lines and categories. Ensure that the axes are clearly labelled, and use a secondary axis in order to avoid any scale discrepancies. Don't use if the relationship between the line and column data is not clear or meaningful.

Use case / Examples

1. To show the relationship between digitalisation and revenue growth over time.
2. To show the relationship between a company's investment in employee training and its employee productivity over time.
