Dot density map

Alternative name:

Dot map; point density map; dot distribution map

A map with dots scattered to show the concentration of something in different areas. It's ideal for seeing how things are distributed over a geographical region, and can reveal patterns when the points cluster on the map.

Tips for use and when NOT to use

Adjust dot density for clarity, e.g. one-to-one (one point represents a single count or object) or one-to-many (one point represents a particular unit, such as 1 point = 10 units). And consider using different dot sizes or colours to represent different categories. Don't use if your data isn't evenly distributed geographically or the density is too high to visualise clearly.

Use case / Examples

1. To show the density of tech startups in different cities.
2. To show the geographical concentration of companies that have implemented a particular sustainability initiative.

Question example:

In which regions do you see the greatest potential for growth in your industry over the next five years?
