Dumbbell plot horizontal

Alternative name:

Lollipop chart; high-low chart

This is a chart that uses dots and connecting lines to compare two sets of values across different categories or time points. It's a simple way to show the range of data (minimum–maximum). The chart can be shown horizontally or vertically.

Tips for use and when NOT to use

Can be used to visualise differences between two different points in time, or to compare different viewpoints (e.g. one dot for one demographic group and another for a different group). Limit categories to avoid overcrowding. Use contrasting colours for the bars and the dots.

Use case / Examples

1. To show how attitudes towards a topic have changed across two waves of a survey, and across various demographic groups.
2. To visualise the range of employee satisfaction with different benefits, highlighting areas of high and low satisfaction in order to guide improvements.
