Fan chart

Alternative name:

Cone chart; probability cone

This is a line graph with spreading bands to show a range of possible values. It's typically used to show observed past data, and a range area chart for future predictions.

Tips for use and when NOT to use

Clearly explain the meaning of the fan's widening bands, which represent increasing uncertainty or a range of potential outcomes. Highlight the central projection, which usually represents the most likely scenario. Don't use if the range of possible outcomes is very narrow or the central projection isn't the main focus.

Use case / Examples

1. To illustrate the range of potential future scenarios for the price of a commodity.
2. To visualise business leaders' predictions for economic growth in the next year, with the fan indicating the range of predictions given by the respondents and the middle indicating the median prediction.

Question example:

What are your company's projected revenue growth scenarios for the next five years, considering different economic factors?
