Grid plot

Alternative name:

Waffle chart

This is a grid of small cells, with coloured cells representing the data. This chart often shows a percentage of the whole, progress towards a target or a completion percentage. It can consist of one category or several categories. You can put multiple charts together to show a comparison.

Tips for use and when NOT to use

Use to show parts of a whole across multiple categories, compare the composition or performance of different categories or visualize simple yes/no or on/off data. Don't use if: your data is complex, nuanced or needs precise numerical comparisons; there are too many categories, which make the grid overwhelming; or differences between values are small and hard to distinguish by colour.

Use case / Examples

To show the proportion of respondents who agree, disagree or are neutral on a specific policy issue.

Question example:

What percentage of your company's workforce is made up of each generation? (Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z.)
