Isotype/pictogram

Alternative name:

Pictograph

This is a chart that uses symbols or icons to represent quantities. Each icon can represent one unit or any number of units (e.g. each icon represents 10). Datasets are compared side by side in either columns or rows of icons.

Tips for use and when NOT to use

Choose clear, relevant icons to represent your data. Make sure that the scaling of icons is accurate and easy to understand. Don't use if your values are not easily divisible into whole units or if your dataset is too big.

Use case / Examples

1. To represent the number of employees in different departments.
2. To represent the number of respondents who report experiencing different types of workplace challenges (e.g. burnout, lack of career development opportunities, discrimination).
