Marimekko chart

Alternative name:

Mosaic plot; mekko chart

This is a 100% stacked bar chart where the width and height of each segment represent two different variables. It's suitable for comparing proportions across multiple dimensions.

Tips for use and when NOT to use

These charts are better for giving a general overview of data because they can be hard to read — especially when you have a lot of segments. Label both axes clearly, with category names and units of measurement. Use a colour scheme that distinguishes between categories and highlights the proportions. Don't use if the data doesn't naturally fit into a two-dimensional matrix or when the focus is on values instead of proportions.

Use case / Examples

1. To show the revenue and market share of different product categories.
2. To show the relative profitability of a company's different product categories.
