Range area chart

Alternative name:

Band chart; high-low area chart; angular range

This is an area chart that shows a range of values instead of a single line. It's ideal for showing the fluctuation of a variable over time or across categories when you have a high value and a low value for each data point.

Tips for use and when NOT to use

Clearly label the upper and lower bounds of the range. Consider using a colour gradient to show the range. Don't use if the range of your values is very narrow or if the focus needs to be on a single value over time; a line chart might be more appropriate in these cases.

Use case / Examples

To show the range of estimated costs for different project scenarios and to highlight the potential risks and uncertainties.

Question example:

What is the range of estimated return on investment (ROI) for your company's new product launch, based on different market scenarios?
