Span graph vertical

Alternative name:

High-low chart; span chart; range graph; floating bar graph; difference graph; column range

This is a type of bar or column chart showing the range between high and low values for each item. Ideal for comparing ranges, typically between categories.

Tips for use and when NOT to use

Span charts focus the reader on the extreme values and give no information on the data points between the minimum and maximum values, such as on the averages or the data distribution. Clearly label the high and low points for each category. Don't use if you only have a single data point for each category or when the range between high and low values is not important to your analysis.

Use case / Examples

1. To show the range of employee salaries for different job levels within a company by highlighting the gap between the highest and lowest earners.
2. To visualise the range of carbon emission reduction targets set by different companies within a specific industry.
