Timeline

This is a way to display a list of events in chronological order. Some timelines work on a scale, while others simply display events in sequence.

Tips for use and when NOT to use

Sequential timelines (displays a list of events chronologically, with a uniform distance between each marker) are useful if space is limited because they just give a simple listing of events. A scaled timeline (displays a scale for time and has markers on the dates of events) allows you to see how events are distributed over time and to see if any patterns appear in a certain time period. Include only your most significant events to keep your visualisation clean and focused, and use clear labels and date markers for easy reference. If possible, differentiate the importance of events with different colours and/or sizes of icon.
