Trendline

Alternative name:

Line of best fit

This is a line on a chart that represents the general direction or tendency of the data points. Trendlines are often used in scatterplots, line charts and bar charts to visualise overall trends and make predictions about future values.

Tips for use and when NOT to use

Clearly indicate the time period covered by the trendline and consider adding a confidence interval to show uncertainty around the trend. Highlight turning points or significant changes in the trend. Don't use if your data isn't continuous or doesn't indicate a clear trend over time.

Use case / Examples

To show the trend of employee satisfaction with remote work policies over time.

Question example:

How has the number of cyber attacks targeting your industry changed over the past five years?
