Waterfall chart

Alternative name:

Bridge chart; mario chart

This is a chart that shows how a starting value is changed by a series of increases or decreases. It helps to visualise the step-by-step changes that lead to a final result.

Tips for use and when NOT to use

Clearly label each bar with its corresponding value and indicate whether it's positive or negative. Use contrasting colours for positive and negative values and consider adding a cumulative line to show the running total. Don't use if the sequence of changes isn't important or if cumulative values are more relevant than individual changes.

Use case / Examples

To show the cumulative impact of various factors (e.g. increased revenue, cost reductions, tax benefits) on a company's profitability after implementing a new strategy.

Question example:

How have various factors (e.g. new product launches, cost-cutting measures, market fluctuations) affected your company's overall revenue over the past year?
